Textile pact bolster ties between the U.S. and China

Article Abstract:

The US and China agreed to extend their textile pact for another four years and agreed on conditions that will reduce trade restrictions for textiles and textile products. Industry observers noted that the pact will not decrease the trade imbalance between the two countries. China's textile export to the US in 1995 amounted to $6.6 billion and $5.9 billion for the first nine months of 1996, while US textile exports to China amounted to only $64 million for 1995 and $55.2 million for the first nine months of 1996. The pact also allows US to retain its tariff sanctions on China for previous transshipment violations.

U.S. trade tactic is key to broader China policy

Article Abstract:

The Clinton administration is touting its successful resolution of intellectual property rights issues with China as a model trade strategy. The strategy involves regular talks between trade representatives of both nations to resolve crises as soon as possible. Analysts noted that the success of the talks stems from the heavy investments, in terms of capital and diplomacy, by both countries which serve as a strong motivation for seeking trade resolutions.
