Textiles: foot in the door

Article Abstract:

Asian textile manufacturers do not expect to reap any immediate benefits from the common European market. Recession has led to a fall in European demand for textiles, leading European textile manufacturers to press for protection. The European Community (EC) is concerned that a common 'Euro-quota' will lead to a flood of Asian textile exports to the EC and is considering freezing quotas at the existing levels. The EC is also concerned over the boom in Chinese footwear exports which are threatening the survival of European footwear manufacturers.

Seeing eye-to-eye: the European union and Japan embark on a new era

Article Abstract:

European Union officials tout the success of their own negotiating tactics with Japan and contrast them to the US' more confrontational methods. French leader Jacques Chirac attacked the US for going outside the World Trade Org and not opening to other countries its talks over auto imports. The EU also points to its June agreement relaxing restrictions on certification and testing of European cars entering Japan. The US threatens to unilaterally impose a $5.9 billion tariff on Japanese luxury cars unless an agreement is reached.

A new deal: European union increases quotas for Asian exporters

Article Abstract:

On Jan 20, 1995, the European Community signed separate agreements with China, India, and Pakistan raising the quotas for exporters to the EC. The amicable negotiations also secured the Asian nations' aid in fighting fraud, cutting tariffs, and lifting restrictions. The agreement with China roughly doubled its silk, ramie, and linen quota to 38,000 tonnes, and may help ease its entry into the new World Trade Organization.
