Thai Reinsurance attacks

Article Abstract:

Thai Reinsurance PCL has earned the preference of investors and analysts, as it has continued to register a profit amid the collapse of the Thailand's economy. Even with a market capitalization of only around $80 million, the insurance firm is among the few Thai firms that have apparently overcome the regional financial downturn, as it registered a 14% increase in its net profit in the six months ending June 30, 1998, to reach 140 million baht. Compared by investors to some small yet well-managed Asian companies such as Philippine softdrink manufacturer Cosmos Bottling, Thai Reinsurance is however held tightly by a nominal group of institutional investors, owners and Thai insurers.

Thais flip past Elle's flashy pages to peruse local women's magazines

Article Abstract:

Thailand's local women's magazines are giving foreign fashion publications strong competition in terms of readership. The glossy magazine Dichan, which means 'I,' sells at least twice as many as the French magazine Elle. Analysts believe that the combination of Western and Thai taste gives the local magazines an edge over their foreign counterparts. Another reason is that local magazines cost half-the-price of foreign magazines.
