Thais blast U.S. trademark

Article Abstract:

About 500 Thai farmers are protesting a US trademark on a strain of rice developed by Alvin, TX-based RiceTec Inc. The farmers are concerned that the trademark of the name "Jasmati" for a rice strain meant to taste like Thailand's jasmine rice, may threaten the farmers' ability to sell one of the country's leading exports. In a letter to US Trade Representative Charlene Barshefsky, the farmers are calling for the banning of the use of any form of the name "jasmine" on rice grown in the US. However, US Embassy officials said the fears are a misunderstanding bolstered by inaccurate news reports.

Article Abstract:

United Broadcasting, the No. 1 pay-television company in Thailand, has received public complaints for increasing service rates for SuperSport 1 and SuperSport 2 channels prior to the start of Britain's Premier League football championship. The company has informed its 280,000 customers to pay another monthly fee $2.40 aside from a monthly charge of 890 baht for the sports channels. United Broadcasting also canceled the 400-baht-a-month package in the Home Box Office channel that would require its movie subscribers to shift to its premium 890-baht Gold Package to maintain their subscription.

As beer battle rages, Thai brewers are trading monopoly accusations

Article Abstract:

Sura Marahas division is charging Singha beer maker Boon Rawd Brewery of monopolizing Thailand's beer market. Boon Rawd Brewery's Singha beer, which has been retailed for 65 years, has covered a market share of 92% in 1994. Sura Marahas, a leading manufacturer of whiskey and other hard liquors, competes with Boon Rawd Brewery through its Chang Beer that had 30% of the market for the six months ended March 31, 1998. On the other hand, Boon Rawd countered Chang Beer with its low-priced Leo beer in June 1998.
