The Americas shift toward private health care

Article Abstract:

Chile was a pioneer in involving the provate sector in the public health care system, and the Chilean model has been influential in Latin America, for example in Colombia. World Bank pressure has been one factor influencing this trend, which has been less apparent in Canada. There have been problems with private sector provision, such as insurers being reluctant to take on higher risk clients, such as older people and those from rural areas. Meanwhile, US managed care providers also entering the Latin American market.

Don't fall sick on the prairie

Article Abstract:

The ageing population of Pratt County, Kansas faces a scarcity of doctors, and reimbursement levels do not keep pace with hospital costs in Pratt County and in rural Nebraska. Doctors tend not to be attracted to rural areas though crime rates are low, and they can work as generalists. Nebraska has tried remedies such as a rural residency program, and also plans to attract students as youg as those from high school to interest them in rural medicine.
