The Brazilian - Argentine free trade agreement: two weak links join

Article Abstract:

A free trade agreement was signed between Brazil and Argentina in November 1988 which called for the creation of a regional common market and the elimination of all tariff and non-tariff barriers by 1998. The two countries are suffering from hyperinflation, slow growth, and political instability, and it is hoped that the countries will strengthen their economic situations through the partnership. There is skepticism, however, about how successful the agreement will be. Argentinians fear that they will not be able to compete with Brazil's more effective and experienced export manufacturing industries, and some Brazilian sectors complain that the agreement will open them up to competition from Argentinian companies that have lower labor and energy costs.

Japan's manufacturing edge

Article Abstract:

The International Manufacturing Futures Project surveyed 1,500 large manufacturers to ascertain the strategic intentions of US, European, and Japanese manufacturers. The survey reveals that the Japanese have moved far ahead of US and European competitors. Japanese manufacturers have shifted their emphasis from quality production, in which US and European firms already lag behind, to emphasizing flexible manufacturing policies that greatly reduce overhead expense. Although US and European manufacturers have reduced the gap between themselves and Japanese corporations in terms of product quality, the study predicts that the Japanese are turning away from emphasizing quality to use price as a competitive weapon.
