The Czech Republic: high hopes

Article Abstract:

Foreign businesses are increasingly becoming interested in acquiring a share of companies in the Czech Republic, particularly those in the newly privatised industries. An 89% share of the distillery company, Jan Becher Karlovarska Berherovka, has been purchased by a partnership between Czech and French businesses. A 50.5% share of power producer Elekrarny Opatovice has been purchased by the UK company, National Power PLC, and the German company, Steag AG. It is anticipated Normura Securities will go ahead with its controversial acquisition of the Investicni a Povtovni Banka.

Czech Republic: investors catch 'fourth'wave

Article Abstract:

The Czech Republic government tried to encourage the sale of public owned firms into private ownership, with the sale of Elektrarny Opatovice for $160 million to National Power UK in Sept 1997. Political unrest had led to a previous suspension of privatization in the Czech Republic, and businesses hoped the new wave of activity would encourage restructuring and investment. Japanese-based Nomura International bid for both brewing firm Pivovar Radegast and bank Investicni a Postovni Banka.
