The Daewoo comrade: South Korean firm blazes northern trail

Article Abstract:

Daewoo Corp Chmn Kim Woo Choong led a delegation on an official trip to North Korea to explore investment opportunities in the communist north. Daewoo will be the first foreign company to be allowed commercial activities in North Korea according to an announcement made by South Korea. The conglomerate, however, has not been performing well of late because of problems in its venture with General Motors Corp and with its shipbuilding subsidiary. The North Korean gamble may be Daewoo's salvation.

Seeds of revolution: South Korean steel firm pioneers hi-tech farm

Article Abstract:

The South Korean company Pohang Iron and Steel Co or Posco has given hope to many despairing farmers with its pioneer and hi-tech glasshouse farm. The farm is a prototype of the Netherland's successful greenhouse technology and South Korean policymakers are thinking of an easy financing scheme to help farmers avail of the technology. Also, agricultural products expected from the glasshouse farms can reduce the overwhelming trade deficit of South Korea with Japan.

Ice cream, comrade?

Article Abstract:

Giant food firm Nestle has been granted access into China through a joint venture with Hong Kong-based Dairy Farms. The enterprise would engage in ice cream production. Nestle paid the Hong Kong firm HK$1.3 billion equivalent to US$167 million for the contract. The venture is expected to be successful and is intended to be the first of a series of investments of the Swiss firm in China.
