McDonald's leads the fast food sector of the French consumer catering market, with a value share of 54.5% in 1997, compared to 52.2% in 1993. McDonald's, which is routinely expanding its network of stores and promoting its products enthusiastically, maintains a wide margin over the second-biggest fast food chain, Quick, which registered a value share of 17.5% in 1997. Other fast-food companies include Tricon, with a 5.7% value share in 1997; Le Duff, with 4.0%; Bretonniere, with 2.0%; Burger King, with 1.9%; Groupe Holder, with 1.8%; and Relais H, with 1.5%.

The French consumer catering arena is anticipated to continue on its trend away from traditional independent outlets, towards restaurant chains, effectively placing increased control on chain operators. Traditional, full-service restaurants are expected to continue losing business to quick-service operations such as cafeterias, fast food restaurants and theme restaurants. Driven mainly by theme restaurants, the restaurants sector is expected to retain its foremost position in the market, with an expected turnover share of 62.4% by year 2002.
