The French take a run at Piccadilly Circus

Article Abstract:

After Arthur Guinness Son and Co. purchased the Gleneagles Hotels, it leased the Piccadilly Hotel in London to the Meridien Group (a French corporation). Upon signing the 124-year lease, Meridien changed the hotel's name to Le Meridien and paid Arthur Guinness Son and Co. $44 million. Le Meridien's new management is described, and plans for the hotel are discussed. Le Meridien houses 290 rooms that are available for around $180 per night. Suites come with well-stocked mini-bars, fruit bowls, boxes of handmade chocolates, real linens, and Wedgewood china service sets. Le Meridien also features a health club, a library, and a health food restaurant. The Meridien group's 1985 financial results indicate a $3.5 million annual profit on turnover of $660 million; the group employs 15,000 people worldwide and consists of 52 hotels (for a total of 18,604 rooms).

Opulence Espanol

Article Abstract:

The insconspicuous entrance of the Ritz Hotel in Madrid, Spain gives no clue to the opulent interior that awaits guests. The turn-of-the-century landmark boasts of tastefully decorated rooms that offer not only the usual amenities, but other services such as round-the-clock Cable News Network and individual facsimile machines. The hotel has a superb staff who 'functions like clockwork' and provides discreet but extremely vigilant security. In addition, the Ritz is strategically located. It is near the central Madrid hubbub of Plaza de la Lealtad, just left of Plaza Canovas Castillo and next door to the Museo del Prado. In return for the luxury and excellent service it offers, the Ritz understandably charges higher rates than the average hotel.
