The PolyGram test

Article Abstract:

There are dangers in seeking to impose a European partner on PolyGram Filmed Entertainment (PFE), which Seagram is seeking to sell. European Union culture commissioner, Marcelino Oreja, has contacted Telefonica and Deutsche Telecom to see if they would buy PFE. Yet US studios are setting up European subsidiaries, and foreign box office revenues are increasingly important for Hollywood, which means that US studios have an interest in promoting European motion pictures. Telecoms companies are not driven by the same factors as motion picture companies, and should not mix.

Misdirected pride

Article Abstract:

Serbia has been portrayed in motion pictures, and Serbian movie-makers have to be careful not to offend President Slobodan Milosevic. Three movies, 'Black cat, White Cat', 'The Wounds' and 'The Powder Keg' show an international-minded population that has been let down by the political leadership. Serbs are presented as victims of war, but the issue of why war has been pursued has not been addressed. There is an element of injured patriotism in these movies.
