Fernando met for talks with Tamil Tiger leader Velupillai Prabhakaran and says that he finds that the Tigers are willing to negotiate. Sri Lankan leaders dismiss Fernando's assessment of Prabhakaran as courteous and humane.

Sri Lankans are working to heal divisions created in 1956 as the result of a language policy change. Though Sinhala is still the official language, efforts to accept Tamil and encourage the use of English are being made.

Sri Lanka's violence should be a warning to all countries dealing with nationalist movements. Governments must learn to negotiate with nationalists and allow concessions when necessary.
