The proposed merger of Glaxo Wellcome and SmithKline Beecham will create the world's second-largest company. New patents and technologies are revolutionizing the pharmaceuticals industry.

The first gene was cloned in 1972, and since that time significant strides have been made in genetic and molecular research. It is likely that by 2010 all human proteins will be identified, allowing researchers to develop new, innovative applications.
