The battle for the last mile

Article Abstract:

AT and T is competing against Comcast to acquire MediaOne, which ranks fourth among US cable companies. This bid is part of a struggle for control of Internet access and a move by AT and T away from long-distance telephony. There is a wider move by wireless, satellite, telephone and cable companies to control direct links to domestic users, competition which has intensified as usage of the Internet has increased. AT and T's strength could worry regulators, though regulatory decisions may be made on political rather than economic grounds.

A fight to the wire

Article Abstract:

Vodaphone AirTouch has made a bid for Mannesmann following the acquisition of Orange by Mannesmann. Orange is a Vodaphone rival in Britain. Mannesmann opposes the bid, as do German labor unions. There are arguments that hostile takeovers run counter to German business principles, though hostile takeovers have occurred by stealth. Two thirds of Mannesmann stocks are held abroad, which means that German politicians cannot easily pressurize investors. The bid could improve corporate conduct standards in Germany.
