The best...and the rest

Article Abstract:

The salaries of the majority of employees are dependent on local conditions, but this does not apply to some employees, such as computer programmers, who have scarce skills. Modern communications allow such workers to work in a different country from the country where they live. Executives's salaries are also increasingly linked to the stock prices of their companies, and gains on options can form a large part of salaries. Pay inequality looks set to increase as companies seek to provide rewards for scarce skills and for productivity.

Who wants to be a billionaire?

Article Abstract:

The spread of stock options as a way of rewarding executives has led to an increase in the proportion of billionaires in relation to the workforce as a whole. Stock options became more attractive after tax changes introduced by Bill Clinton making non-performance-related pay non-deductible, while stock options are deductible as business expenses. This trend has increased the proportion of US companies owned by senior management, and has helped smaller companies to compete with larger companies.

The need for greed: it is commonly argued that to get company bosses to pursue their interests, shareholders should turn them into owners. Should they?

Article Abstract:

Chief executive compensation has become more difficult to determine and evaluate since the form of compensation has changed. Compensation should be based on immediate issues that management can control rather than shareholder value as that can be affected by external factors.
