There are obviously many differences between the events of 1897 and 1997, but there are also interesting similarities. Both years saw a massive royal procession in the UK, Russia struggled with an inefficient economic system, and fish and timber disputes were taking place between the US and Canada.

Severin wishes to prove that Mayan and other Central and South American cultures were influenced by Chinese was traveled by raft across the Pacific in 300 BC. Severin's historic facts are in dispute, but his raft voyage should be interesting anyway.
