The colonel rides on

Article Abstract:

Colonel Hugo Chavez may be elected as Venezuela's president in Dec 1998, and his Polo Patriotico alliance has performed well in elections in Nov 1998. The alliance has over a third of Congress seats and eight state governorships of a total of 23. Chavez' rivals could support a single candidate which would threaten his chances of becoming president. Chavez led the equivalent of a mutiny in 1992 andopponents are concerned that he sought to head a coup.

A message from the people

Article Abstract:

Hugo Chavez has won a presidential election in Venezuela and promises an end to corrupt officials and gangs. He previously attempted a coup, which failed, but he gained 56% of the vote in the elections of Dec 6 1998. There are mixed signals on economic policy, and there is some concern about talks of renegotiation for the country's foreign debt, a higher minimum wage, but no mention of wealth creation rather than wealth redistribution.
