The conquest of location

Article Abstract:

Mobile communications have not eradicated the importance of location, as is shown by real estate prices in Manhattan and Silicon Valley. It is also shown by the experiences of companies that have sought to encourage employees to work from hot desks with mobile phones. Yet the limitations of location are being overcome as people can take access to information and communications with them. Mobile phones can also enhance location, allowing greater communication within a locality. Smart phones will take this revolution further as mobile phones come to take on a number of functions such as tourist guides and devices for gaining access to the Internet.

A mobile merry-go-round

Article Abstract:

Mannesmann is acquiring Orange, while France Telecom is acquiring a controlling stake in E-Plus. These deals follow an earlier deal between Vodaphone and AirTouch, and reflect a trend toward consolidation in the mobile telecoms market. Orange has been successful in attracting new subscribers and has been a pioneer in tariff bundle marketing. Mobile telephony may overtake fixed-line telephony and this will affect former telecoms monopolists.
