The corporate barons of the 21st century

Article Abstract:

The success of private equity firms in acting as agents of extensive corporate change is reflected in the growing proportion of total merger and acquisition activity represented by private equity buyout deals. The new challenge for private equity owners is to develop the new abilities demand by the responsibilities of ownership. As owner, the private equity firm has a much more significant influence over strategy, large investments and period to exit. Private equity firms must both maximize rewards for fund investors and manage the risks connected with majority corporate ownership as opposed to minority investment.

A growing appetite

Article Abstract:

Senior debt financing is the preferred option in mid-market deals, however the market is responding to the growing challenge of high-yield bonds and securitisation by becoming more flexible and varied. The issuance of high yield bonds has risen from $2 billion in 1997 to $4 billion to date in 1998. Banks which offer a combination of senior debt and high-yield products are expected to reap the benefits in the year 2000.
