The defence industry jettisons its excess baggage

Article Abstract:

US firms are concentrating on successful weapons manufacturing and eliminating efforts to diversify. British Aerospace PLC is following this example and plans to cut projects such as car manufacturing. The downturn in defense spending and the reasons firms do not pursue civilian manufacturing are discussed.

Article Abstract:

British Aerospace reported a loss of $143 million in 1991. The company purchased the Rover Group, an automobile company, from the British government in 1988. It is counting on it now to produce profits that will help the parent company to remain profitable and independent.
