The deficit bugaboo

Article Abstract:

The central economic debate is whether America is better off having lower taxes on interest, dividends and capital gain or having a lower deficit. The challenge before the President is to show that the budget targets will be met by vetoing of spending bills when necessary, and reduction of taxes on productive savings and investment to keep the economy growing.

France's Geophysique to buy U.S. rival Veritas for $3.1 billion

Cie. Generale de Geophysique of France is to purchase Veritas DGC Inc. of the United States for $3.1 billion. The merger is part of a trend of acquisitions in the petroleum services industry. Veritas share purchase price is $75 per share, a 21 percent premium.

U.S. trade deficit widenend in September; Gap betweem imports, exports hits $34.3 billion

Article Abstract:

Teh United States Department of Commerce reported that the gap between imports and exports for the U.S. in September 2000 was $34.3 billion, almost 13% higher than expected. Weaker exports cause slower overall growth in the economy.
