The determinants of target returns in European bank mergers

Article Abstract:

The study examines the factors that contribute to abnormal returns in European bank mergers. Sixty-seven deals from Europe are studied for which players were listed companies, and findings indicate that European cross-border acquisitions generate higher returns than national acquisitions. Higher returns are created by cash deals and deals that are made with a mix of cash and equity loan notes, and it was found out that relative asset growth rate and target profitability have significant positive relation with stock return.
