The doctor's dilemma

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom National Health Service (NHS) is efficient and cheap, though Britain has poor survival rates for people with some serious conditions. This is true for younger British women with breast cancer, as well as women with heart conditions. There are problems in gaining access to specialists due to a low number of doctors. The government is carrying out a spending review, and may devote more funds to the NHS in this review, and may also provide more funds for health in the budget in Mar 2000.

A new prescription

Article Abstract:

The British National Health Service (NHS) is to be given extra funds, and this will not automatically solve its problems. More nurses and doctors are needed, and they take time to train. Performance varies from one hospital to another, and between NHS trusts. There is concern that central government does not have the knowledge for intervention, and there are political pressures on the NHS. The costs of the NHS are likely to rise due to higher demand, linked to an ageing population and the increased costs of drugs. Rationing is an issue that has to be faced, despite the extra cash.
