The fight against ilegal loggers

Article Abstract:

The government is seeking to control illegal logging in Cambodia, where forestry accounted for 43% of the country's exports in 1997. Felling at existing rates could lead to a total tree loss over four years, according to the World Bank, and demand from Japan and South Korea is forecast to rise. Forests are being felled in Laos, and deforestation has speeded up in Myanmar since it was taken over by the military. Timber exports from Cambodia have been prohibited since 1996, and lost revenue accounted for by illegal logging was estimated at $60 million for 1997. Erosion and flooding are linked to deforestation.

Gone is the forest primeval

Article Abstract:

Genetic engineering of trees has prgressed slowly, partly because of the large amount of genetic material that some trees contain, and because trees are slow growing. There has also been little commercial incentive to improve tree quality while virgin forests have been available. This is changing as natural forests are depleted and demand for timber increases. Genetic markers allow trees to be assessed before they have become fully grown, and work on this area is being carried out at North Carolina State University.
