The germ of an idea

Article Abstract:

The Ebbw Vale Garden Festival promises to feature more interesting design work than any of the other National Garden Festival events, as planners and designers have learnt from the mistakes of the past. Materials are being imaginatively used on a site with a high degree of clarity, and this event may mark the beginning of a true landscape design movement in the UK. The garden festival being held in Zoetermeer New Town near The Hague, the Netherlands, is even more marketing- and design-based than that in Ebbw Vale, and has a strong overall design pattern without being dramatic. The different investment levels for the two events are compared.

How the land lies

Article Abstract:

Milton Keynes, England has a planned landscape that serves to unify the town. The major grid roads are lined with trees while parks, open spaces and a network of pedestrian and cycle routes make up 20% of the total area. The planned landscaping gives the town a coherance it would other wise lack and shows an attention to the look of the place and quality of the environment. This will have to be maintained on a continuous basis. As well as problems of continued maintenance, there are problems associated with the layout of the cycle routes but generally, the planned landscape is successful.
