The golden boys: a determined pair of geologists strike pay dirt in Indonesia's hills

Article Abstract:

Geologists Mike de Guzman and his colleague John Felderhof, vice chairman of Bre-X Minerals of Canada, a mining company, spent years prospecting in Indonesia, and found the Busang gold prospect. Bre-X began drilling on the now famous Southeast Zone, known as Busang II. It is believed that the high concentration of minerals found at Busang was due to the dome-like geological structure which lay at a fault line crossroads. The Busang III concession has yet to be drilled, and geological abnormalities have been identified by satellite imagery.

Now hear this: Irian Jaya rebels learn to play hardball

Article Abstract:

Rebels in Indonesia's Irian Jaya highlands have shown unexpected sophistication in their negotiations for the release fo 13 kidnapped conservationists. Guerrilla leader Kelly Kwalik managed to produce a seven-page demand statement, neatly typed in grammatically correct Indonesian, despite the rebels' Stone-age reputation. However, the speed with which the ed Cross was able to respond to his needs, and to several intervening and related crises, seemed to catch Kwalik off-guard.
