The good earth

Article Abstract:

Thailand's rural economy is to some extent protected from the crisis affecting banks and finance companies in urban areas. Self-sufficiency in agriculture gives some protection, and the Thai government is hoping that agricultural exports will increase. Tourism is also seen as a help for the economy, and the drop in value of the Thai baht should help the tourist industry. Inhabitants of rural areas are still affected by developments in urban centers. Migrants remittances from urban to rural areas have been affected, and would-be migrants have had to return to their rural homes.

Upwardly mobile

Article Abstract:

Companies in Asia and elsewhere are racing to develop and launch satellite telephone systems. At least three regional networks using one or two satellites each are in the works, as are five global systems. Asia will almost certainly be the testing ground for such technology because of the number of potential users and the widespread ineffectiveness of existing alternatives. The global systems will cost more to develop and may have higher charges, but allow use of a single handset anywhere on the planet.

Downwardly mobile

Article Abstract:

Thailand's short-term sovereign-debt rating has been downgraded by Moody's, which is concerned about the build-up of short-term debt. The country's gross domestic product (GDP) is forecast to show slower growth, and growth of exports has already slowed. Thailand also faces political problems. The downgrading is not likely to have a major impact on interest rates. A debt scandal relating to the Bangkok Bank of Commerce has yet to be resolved and is also causing concern.
