Creating a new design for a piece of equipment on a computer is saving manufacturers the expense of creating devices that do not work. "Virtual manufacturing" allows designers to make sure the equipment will work before it is actually built.

Almost 4,000 companies have built maquiladora factories in the area of Mexico that borders the US. The region offers cheap labor and is close to US markets. A more developed form of industrialization is emerging in the area.

Lighten up: magnesium for manufacturing

Article Abstract:

Automakers are starting to see the advantages of using magnesium in their car bodies. It has only two-thirds the density of aluminum, yet is stronger per pound than any other common metal. It is also easily recyclable.
