Consequences of inventory stockouts

Article Abstract:

This article reports the results of a study that investigated the consequences for 180 National Association of Purchasing Management buyers of not receiving delivery (stockout) of products their companies had purchased. The results showed that stockouts often cause costly production disruptions and that buyers often abandon suppliers who can't deliver the product. The study raises a series of sales and distribution management issues. (Reprinted by permission of the publisher.)

Issues related to the relationship between manufacturers and distributors are examined, focusing on the impact of changing economic conditions, such as mergers and acquisitions, on the relationships. Topics include relationship determinants such as trust, communications, investments, and product salability; the difference between marketing and behavioral determinants; and implications for management.
