The invisible man: media ignore opposition leader's court victory

Article Abstract:

Opposition politician Tunku Razaleigh Hamzah has been unable to get most of his country's media outlets to publicize his innocence of corruption charges. The newspapers and tv stations, nearly all controlled or owned by the governing parties or their senior officials, have mostly declined to carry an ad for the 'South China Morning Post' apologizing for a Feb 1994 article. That story said Razaleigh, then a senior finance official, received shares in an ailing company to which a bank Razaleigh influenced made huge loans. He was found innocent of all charges.

Not taken lightly: opposition MP charged with sedition

Article Abstract:

Malaysian officials have charged Lim Guan Eng with sedition over his claim that the government was pursuing a double standard in dropping its case against a former chief minister of the city of Malacca who was accused of having an affair with a 15-year-old girl. Lim's words were apparently mild compared to those used by other critics, but as an opposition MP his treatment can serve as an example to intimidate other politicians.
