Bill Clinton's economic reform promises are already fading. His promises to raise taxes only for the rich and to cut the White House budget are just two ideas he seems to have forgotten. Clinton should stand up against political lobbyists and allow the economy to recover on its own.

Debate over Pres Clinton's economic plan continues in Congress, where there are complaints that taxes are being raised too much and spending is not being cut enough. The proposed new energy tax is being opposed by some Senate Democrats, jeopardizing the entire plan.

Now that Pres Clinton has unveiled his plan for deficit reduction and economic growth, he faces the much harder task of selling it to the public and to Congress. Republicans have already indicated that the political struggle over the plan will be intense.
