The long and bumpy road

Article Abstract:

International shipping by truck and rail is facing obstacles despite improvements in infrastructure. The shipping industry deals with capacity shortages, particularly with the fuel-price increases which prompts shippers to scramble for service. The rail industry faces the threat of re-regulation which looms as a backlash for the decreased service levels resulting from the mergers of the 1990s. Another problem facing shipper is congestion arising from inadequate facilities at the major ports.
