The media are missing Hong Kong's story

Article Abstract:

Hong Kong is grossly misrepresented by journalists who insist on focusing on the political disparity between mainland China and Hong Kong instead of concentrating on economic issues. It should be remembered that Deng Xiaoping devised the 'one country, two systems' policy wherein Hong Kong maintains its political identity from mainland China. The continuing prosperity of Hong Kong is attributed to China's drive towards economic modernization and its investments in Hong Kong totaling $60 B. Hong Kong firms also invested a total of $77 B into China.

Strident voices tempered in values debate

Article Abstract:

The heated debate on Asian values has finally quieted down with neither side having settled the issue. The debate saw Asia successfully challenging the West's assumed superiority but it also provided Asians with a look at their own shortcomings. The dispute is certainly rooted in the different kind of values stressed in Eastern and Western societies. However, there are those in the region who criticize the use of Asian values as an excuse for autocratic practices and tyranny.

Values debate is a facade for genuine tensions

Article Abstract:

Many Western governments have criticized some Asian countries for being too authoritarian and rigid. Asian countries have retaliated with calls for Asian unity against Western ideas and the moral deterioration they represent. Some experts have cited this growing exchange as signs of a looming cultural conflict. There is an undeniable friction today between Asia and the West but the actual situation has been greatly exaggerated.
