The new insiders

Article Abstract:

New China Hongkong Group, an investment fund, may wield much influence in Hongkong after China takes control in 1997 since 13 Chinese state-owned companies own 32.5% of the fund's shares. In addition, Hongkong-based investors own 55% while two Singapore-based entities own 12.5%. Chmn Tsui Tsin-tong has overseen this so far successful first effort to set up an officially approved vehicle for Overseas Chinese investment in mainland China. Any new investment fund will find it very difficult to match New China Hongkong's favorable position.

China's ad boom

Article Abstract:

Chinese companieshave become increasingly reliant on advertising to capture a portion of the country's lucrative consumer market. The State Administration of Industry and Commerce reported that advertising expenditure in 1992 increased by 40% to $862million and a minimum 30% growth is forecasted for 1993. The country's advertising firms, however, are still beset with several problems such as cultural diversity, high costs, low commissions and lack of advertising space.

Stay tuned

Article Abstract:

Asia's satellite TV market grows more confused as StarTV's CEO resigns and Dow Jones takes a stake in Asia Business News (ABN). Julian Mounter, StarTV's head since 1991, resigned in spite of new owner News Corp's announcement that he could stay on. Some say that he was initially hired to make the business more saleable. Meanwhile, ABN will compete with StarTV where the latter is weakest: business programming, with an Asian perspective.
