US banks such as Chemical Banking Corp are hopeful that mergers will rejuvenate business by cutting costs and raising capital. Economists have found that banks are less efficient after mergers, and abundant lending capacity is not reduced.

Plenty to go round: Russian finance

Strong economic development caused the Moscow Times stockmarket index to increase six-fold during the last 18 months. This has also boosted the finances of Russian investment banks. Some foreign banks have also entered the Russian market.
