Article Abstract:

Japanese multinationals are getting criticized by other multinationals and by their host countries. One main complaint is that Japanese manufacturing operations overseas bring their own parts suppliers, tantamount to exporting the much-criticized 'keiretsu' or cross-shareholding system. Another complaint is insensitivity to the host country, manifested in high-profile purchases of prize corporations and real estate properties. Local employees complain of long working hours, low wages and limited advancement opportunities compared to those of other multinationals. Thus, Japanese multinationals have a long way to go to become truly international.

Article Abstract:

Japan's economic downturn since 1990 continuous to plunge and might be worse than the economic slump of 1980-83. Statistics show that real GNP growth in 1992 came down to 1.7% from 4.1% in 1991. Government forecasts a 3.3% GNP growth for fiscal year 1993-94 although the private sector forecasts only 2%. The dire consequences of these poor economic performance are more layoffs and retrenchment on the part of companiesand a steep drop in income. Unemployment rose from 2.1% in 1991 to 2.3% in Nov 1992.
