The number guzzler

Article Abstract:

Kunio Kuwahara set up the Institute of Computational Fluid Dynamics in Tokyo, Japan, to carry out research in weather modelling and, by the beginning of 1992, had leased seven supercomputers for his work. Although Kuwahara acquired an international reputation for his work on weather modelling, he overextended himself and bought excess computing power which he could not rent out in the rental market in Japan. High overheads finally forced him to give up six of his computers and buy the seventh outright.

Mechatronic marvels

Article Abstract:

The automatic ticket gates at the Shinjuku railway station in Tokyo, Japan, are one example of the application of mechatronics. Industry leader Omron is developing an even more advanced system using machines that will read magnetic coils embedded in a ticket as well as a ticket vending machine that diagnoses its own maintenance problems. The company is also using computer simulation to improve automatic-teller machines.

Breaking a sound barrier

Article Abstract:

Canon of Japan's breakthrough new stereo speakers widen the area in which listeners can hear stereo sound. The traditionally video company established a special research center in Britain in 1987 to solve the problem of the physically small space in which two speakers give stereo sound. The new design uses audio mirrors to spread high-frequency sounds. Marketing in the US and Japan is Canon Audio's next big problem.
