The other Cojuangco: 'Tony' emerges as new force in Philippines

Article Abstract:

Antonio Cojuangco has proved a potent business force in the Philippines with his bold move to gain control of Philippine Airlines Inc. Cojuangco gambled by using the clan's controlling shares in Philippine Long Distance and Telephone Co to secure business loans to finance his bid for the privatizing airline. However, he tempered the risks with balanced support for the candidates most likely to win in the May 1992 presidential polls. Secure in the family's financial and political power, he had previously used the telecommunications interests to venture into other industries.

Politics on the line

Article Abstract:

Digital Telecommunications Philippines Inc's acquisition of a telephone network in the Philippines was blocked by former Justice Sec Silvestre Bello. The decision not to award the contract, according to Bello, was in compliance with the law that requires public utilities to secure a franchise from Congress. His action, however, was perceived to be politically motivated since he is running for senator in the 1992 election under the party supported by Philippine Long-Distance Telephone Corp (PLDT) Pres Antonio Cojuangco.
