The perils of connections: China's red-chip companies

The huge Shougang steel company's Hong Kong financial dealings are merely the latest business scandals in rapidly privatising China. Shougang owner Zhou Beifang received control of the company with the blessings of Deng Xiaopeng, but he and his Hong Kong-based son are accused of securities fraud.

Many Chinese officials have used their political influence unethically since 1992 when they were first allowed to participate in business enterprises. Demands of capital from other businessmen are met by entrepreneurs who fear to displease the government.
