The political mincing-machine

Article Abstract:

A common reaction to the release of the video testimony of President Bill Clinton is that it was unnecessary. Impeachment is being presented as a legal rather than a political issue, and Congress is seeking to avoid being accused of partisanship. There is not precision about standards for impeachment in the US constitution, and this means that there is opportunity for discretion. The issue is political and so impeachment should be a public process, so the video testimony should have been released.

What Clinton hath wrought

Article Abstract:

The Monica Lewinsky scandal could lead to a drop in the power of the US presidency and a more assertive Congress, and the press could become increasingly intrusive. It is not certain that the presidency will be weakened, however, and the reactions of the US public could lead to a narrowing of the responsibilities of presidential prosecutors. The US public may also soften standards used to judge US presidents, in a move representing an end of idealism that was fed by the Watergate case.
