The politics and economics of privatization in Central and Eastern Europe

Article Abstract:

The post-Communist governments of Eastern Europe view privatization as one of the primary means for transforming their stagnant economies to more dynamic market-oriented systems. Although official economic policy is committed to privatization, actual efforts have moved slowly due to political factors which have effectively hindered the sale of state-owned enterprises. In addition, the significant amount of economic restructuring needed to be accomplished has limited the gains of privatization.

The success and failure of state-owned enterprise divestitures in a developing country: the case of Chile

Article Abstract:

Chile was one of the first nations to adopt a large-scale privatization program. Chile's experience can be grouped into two phases: an initial phase which began in 1974 and a second one in the 1980s. The initial phase was characterized by experimentation since there were virtually no prior experiences with such programs and as a result, some of Chile's efforts failed. However, the lessons learned from this initial phase enabled the country to be more successful in the second phase.
