The quiet Americans: time to reconsider the U.S. legacy in Vietnam

Article Abstract:

The US involvement in Vietnam was tragic for all concerned but it created opportunities that now bolster optimism throughout the region. The US must move forward while recognizing the errors of the past, and Asia's leaders must remember the lessons of that war, especially regarding the expansive nature of military power. The US failure arose because that country never defined its objectives and interests in Vietnam, which were basically good intentioned, not from imperialism or criminal aggression.

Ending America's Vietnam syndrome

Article Abstract:

The United States should normalize trade and diplomatic relations with Vietnam to promote stability in Asia. Vietnam's withdrawal from Cambodia, assistance in emigration of former US personnel and search for untraced soldiers, are positive feelers for the US. US-Vietnamese trade will pave the way for democracy in Vietnam, and control Chinese and Japanese power in the region. Pres Bush must recognize the importance of good relations with Vietnam in the new post-Cold War era.
