The race is on

Article Abstract:

Conflict between India and Pakistan over nuclear weapons testing could have extremely serious international repercussions. Indeed, it is possible that the actions of these two countries will negate many years of negotiations on nuclear restraint, leading to the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. Pakistan has made it clear that it aims for serial production of nuclear warheads and missiles, while India has boosted its defence budget, even though it has offered a moratorium on further nuclear weapons testing.

Might and menace: It's now almost certain that Pakistan will respond to India's five nuclear blasts with a test of its own

Article Abstract:

Pakistan is likely to conduct its own nuclear tests in response to India's five nuclear blasts, even though such a test would mean sanctions from Washington that could jeopardize the economy. Also for Pakistan the threat of a fourth war with India is very real, and the army is on red alert. There are concerns that Indian and Israeli aircraft may mount joint bombing raids on Pakistani nuclear facilities. However Indian analysts do not believe that war is on the agenda.

Sizing up the enemy

Article Abstract:

Pakistan's government anticipates that relations with India will deteriorate further if the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) survives the May 31, 1996, vote of confidence. Indian Prime Minister A.B. Vajpayee has stated that the BJP plans to promote development of nuclear capabilities and would not recognize Kashmir and Jammu as disputed territory. Pakistan attributes an increase in terrorist activity in the Punjab and Islamabad to conservative forces affiliated with BJP.
