The real enemy within

Article Abstract:

Falun Dafa is a school of qi gong, a Chinese quasi-Buddhist technique of mediation and breathing led by Li Hongzhi, who set up Falun Dafa in 1992. The school has marched on Beijing, China, following criticism of qi jong by He Zuoxiu from the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Some observers argue that the decline of socialism leaves a gap that Falun Dafa fills. Others point out the many Falun Dafa members have experienced civil war, hunger, disruption of schooling in the cultural revolution, and limits to family size from the one-child policy. Such people may feel that they have little to lose.

Ten years on

Article Abstract:

There has been political change in China since the Tiananmen Square massacre of 1989, but the massacre is still felt in China. There has been opposition to US involvement in the conflict in Yugoslavia, where the Chinese embassy has been bombed, and there have been other problems with US-Chinese relations, such as spying allegations. The Chinese authorities are still concerned about the impact of the massacre, however, and families of the dead are seeking a criminal investigation of the affair.

The enemy within

Article Abstract:

Pollutant levels tend to be greater indoors than out of doors, even within cities that are polluted. Cynthia Howard-Reed and Richard Corsi from Texas University have discovered that using water for washing and cleaning can lead to chemicals being transferred to the air. Other sources of indoor pollution include gas cookers, computers, and paints. New cars smell of toxic chemicals. Garages that are part of homes can also contribute to exhaust fumes entering the home.
