New wiring

Article Abstract:

Bidcom is one of a new breed of construction companies that can coordinate and record blueprints, specifications, deliveries, and other aspects of building projects. Buildnet is another such company, and is geared to residential construction. These companies are becoming internet hubs that build up content related to the industry to attract customers. The hub can then become a marketplace with middlemen eliminated, and major economies of scale can be achieved.

The real meaning of empowerment

Article Abstract:

US firms are seeking to recruit and retain skilled workers, and casual dress is a symbol of increased employee-power. Banks, accounting firms, and other professional organizations are facing loss of workers to internet companies. Internet companies have a high demand for experienced chief executives. The internet itself offers opportunities for employees seeking to change jobs, who can seek information and advertise themselves. Stock options have also become important. Problems arise where house prices soar to above the reach of poorer employees.

Twinning Mainz and Seattle

Article Abstract:

The largest international book fair is the Frankfurt book fair, with 366,336 titles in 1998, coming from 105 nations. The participants in the 1998 fair have become more relaxed about electronic publishing and its impact on book publishing. CD-ROMS appear to have more of an impact on the market for works of reference than in other fields. The Internet offers a way of selling books, and Bertelemann has acquired a stake of 50% in the online subsidiary of Barnes and Noble.
