The remaking of Japan

Article Abstract:

Changes have affected Japan's economy and society, within a context of continuity. Entrepreneurs are emerging, and the dual economy, which has needed cross-subsidies for less efficient firms to survive, is gradually becoming more transparent. Deregulation has helped the emergence of a new type of retailer with more bargaining power. Welfare industries previously acted as absorbers for unemployment, and this has meant that a social safety net has not developed. Income inequality is increasing in Japan. Change can occur rapidly in Japanese society since all members of society accept change simultaneously due to a tradition of wanting to stay within a group.
