The right to know

Article Abstract:

Texas governor, George W Bush, has stated that he has not used drugs for 25 years. Some commentators argue that he should answer the question of whether he has ever used cocaine. There is tolerance of drug taking in the US, since many people have done so. Bush's case raises questions as to whether he would have passed drugs tests that federal employees have to go through, and whether his drugs policies could be invalidated by his personal experience. Bush has decided against being candid, and the US public appears ready to accept his position.

Dennis Hastert's trouble

Article Abstract:

Republican speaker, Dennis Hastert, replaced Newt Gingrich in the House of Representatives, taking on a role similar to that of John Major in British politics, when he took over from Margaret Thatcher. His powers are limited and he may be unable to act if Republicans decide to vote against measures that have his backing, or kill a budget. There is only a small Republican majority in Congress. There are dangers in seeking to achieve a consensus, in the the party also needs a sense of direction.

Tom Ridge, a new sort of Republican

Article Abstract:

Pennsylavania governor, Tom Ridge, could become a running-mate for candidate Geroge W. Bush. He favors permitting abortion, and encouraging teenage fathers to remain with their children, and he takes a tough line on crime. He has sought to encourage saving by poorer workers, and also favors business. He is part of a group of Republicans favoring both business and aid for the poor, and his pragmatic approcah may represent a new trend which involves greater experimentation at local level.
