The rumbling Caribbean

Article Abstract:

The island of Montserrat is only one among the Caribbean island who are subject to volcanic actions due to the existence of 25 volcanoes. The Soufriere Hills volcano in Montserrat has been emitting ash and boulders for almost two years. According to volcanologists, the eruption of Mont Pelee in French Martinique in 1902 and of Soufriere in 1976 may be followed by another volcanic eruption within 30-40 years. Being a British colony, Montserratians are calling on the British government for more aid. The British government has already eased laws on temporary immigration and promised budgetary support and aid amounting to $55 mil.

Numbers game

Article Abstract:

There is speculation that the number of worshippers at Church of England services has dropped below the 1 million level compared with 1.1 million in 1991, 1.2 million in 1980 and 1.6 million in 1968. The church argues that the number of people attending church may have changed little, though they may attend less often, so statistics should be collected in a new way in order for morale to be maintained. The church is also using modern management methods including an assessment of the perceptions of the church among its 'customers'.
