Banking at your convenience

Article Abstract:

Convenience stores in Japan could become banks by using the internet. The stores can be used for payment collection as well as for distribution, and they already deal with payments of utility bills. These new banks can be linked to the Japanese clearing system, and payments can be processed more easily and cheaply in this way. Seven-Eleven is the biggest chain, and is restricting itself to deposits and payments, which may be due to restrictions imposed by its banking partners.

Late developers

Article Abstract:

There has been some wariness of internet banking in Britain, but this could change. Enaba aims to offer internet banking from Dublin, Ireland, for the British market, and the company could set up a partnership with a bank that is already established. Egg, Citibank and Barclays are to offer free internet access to their customers. Smaller banks have tended to be pioneers in PC banking since large banks are fearful of cannibalising client bases.
