The soaring demand for global training

Article Abstract:

The traditional European stigma attached to postgraduate business education is fading quickly. Driving forces behind the change are: (1) a perceived need for international business acumen and (2) demand for general managers at a time of decentralization. Europe's leading multicultural business schools are INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France and IMEDE in Lausanne, Switzerland. Both schools are initiating major expansion programs, marketing themselves as unique sources of international expertise. The schools are working closely with business to offer curricula based in the 'real world.' Companies may sponsor research or teaching services, or donate funds as charitable contributions. INSEAD's $4 million management of technology and innovation program has attracted support from major organizations such as Ciba-Geigy, General Electric Foundation, BP, Union Bank of Switzerland, EMI, and Timken.

Ousted chairman recalls turbulence of managing change at Thorn EMI

Article Abstract:

Peter Laister discusses his tenure as chairman of Thorn EMI. Laister became chairman of the British electronics firm in 1984. Laister believed that EMI had to make sweeping changes in its product lines and management attitudes, but was forced out of the chairman's job in Aug 1985, before he could implement all of the changes he felt were necessary. Laister discusses the problems associated with managing large scale changes at the corporate level.

Villa d'Este, a luxurious hotel on Lake Como near Milan, is touted to be one of Europe's best locations for business meetings. At a recent conference held there for corporate presidents on American management techniques, the fees were approximately $2,500 per person. A brief history and description of the hotel is given.
